Local gifts push JSF over the top on Leming challenge

ASHLAND, Ky. (Nov. 28, 2003) - Gifts totaling $25,000 to the Jesse Stuart Foundation from the Woodlands Foundation and Foundation for the Tri-State Community, both of Ashland, Ky., have pushed the JSF's capital giving campaign over the top on its goal of $150,000.

"We are deeply grateful to those who serve on the boards of these two community foundations," said Dr. James M. Gifford, JSF senior editor and CEO. "The gifts are recognition of the good work of the Jesse Stuart Foundation and of our importance to downtown Ashland."

The gifts were presented at a recent meeting of the JSF Board of Directors by Erland Stevens, Jr., on behalf of both foundations. The $25,000 finishes the 2-1 match of a $50,000 challenge gift from board members Carl and Buzzy Leming of Edgewood, according to Gifford.

He said the $150,000 is being used for major repairs to the JSF headquarters and to further reduce the debt on the historic building which previously housed the Ashland Post Office. Other major gifts in the 18-month campaign included $25,000 from Harvey and Mae Dixon of Ormond Beach, Fla., and $10,000 from the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.

Gifford said the JSF will continue its fund raising activities on a yearly basis to support various publishing and educational projects.
