Foxfire books now available at JSF

I taught at the University of Georgia from 1971-1976 while I was completing my Ph.D. in history. Several of my UGA students had attended the Rabun Gap School in north Georgia and had worked on the Foxfire Project. Neither they, nor their teachers, had any idea that it would emerge as an important set of books.

Originally the Foxfire project was a way of getting students more actively involved in the learning process by interviewing local residents about regional culture and history. In 1966, the group founded a quarterly magazine named "Foxfire," after a phosphorescent plant. In 1972, several articles from the magazine were published in book form and the acclaimed "Foxfire" series was born.

Now, almost thirty years later, the books are still popular because they teach a philosophy of simplicity in living that is very appealing to citizens in our high-tech, stressful world.

The Foxfire books teach creative self-sufficiency, the art of natural remedies, home crafts, and other Appalachian folk ways. These books are fascinating to readers who want to rediscover the virtues of a simple life.

The Foxfire series contains eleven books, which are handsomely done in a set of matching softcover books.

We also have three more Foxfire books in stock:

  • A Foxfire Christmas
  • The Foxfire Book of Appalachian Toys and Games
  • The Foxfire Book of Appalachian Cookery

  • The fourteen Foxfire books, along with thousands of other regional books, are available at the Jesse Stuart Foundation Bookstore, 1645 Winchester Avenue in downtown Ashland. For more information, call (606) 326-1667.

    Other news of interest:

We have two tenants in our building now.

Ashland Main Street is housed in the front suite of offices on the main floor of the building. Main Street’s Executive Director, Danny Craig, and his secretary, Faye Jupin, are good neighbors and are doing a wonderful job of helping to revitalize Ashland’s downtown area.

Also, housed in a first floor office is Solid Rock Computers, a local, Christian-owned, on-site computer repair, support, and networking business, owned and operated by Doug Heuer. Doug provides fast, honest, reliable, and expert service to individuals, businesses, educational organizations, and government agencies. He has done a tremendous job upgrading and improving the Jesse Stuart Foundation computer systems, and I encourage friends of the Jesse Stuart Foundation to call on Doug for their computer needs @ (606) 831-8989.
