2019 Jesse Stuart Weekend
Friday, September 20
9:00 am to noon: Early-Bird Special - Join Associate Members Bud Vanzant and James Shoup for a Friday morning early-bird special! Visit Cane Creek School, the site of Jesse Stuart’s teaching assignment in The Thread That Runs So True.
1:30 pm: Jesse Stuart Nature Preserve - Join Bud Vanzant for a trip to the Jesse Stuart Nature Preserve (JSNP). The preserve consists of 714 acres, which were originally part of Stuart’s farm. Bud will conduct a hike to Seaton Ridge, a part of JSNP inaccessible by car. There you’ll explore Stuart’s world and visit such sites as “Old Opp’s Cabin,” made famous in Stuart’s The Good Sprit of Laurel Ridge. Meet Bud in the Lobby at 1:30 pm. Wear shoes suitable for hiking.
7:30 pm: Board Member David Palmore will welcome you to the 2019 Jesse Stuart Weekend and briefly review the weekend events. Dr. James Gifford will orchestrate the program:
- Bluetick Pig, edited by Cathy Roberts
- True Christmas Stories From the Heart of Appalachia, compiled and edited by James M. Gifford, Wayne Onkst, and Judith Kidwell
At the conclusion, JSF authors will be available to sign their books.
Saturday, September 21
9:00 am: W-Hollow Tour - JSF Board member David Palmore will guide an informative (and fun!) bus tour of the land that inspired Stuart’s literary creations. Meet David in the Lobby at 8:45 am. Bus seats available on a first-come, first-served basis. JSW attendees have first priority for seating.
1:30 pm: Tour of the JSF headquarters - Visit the JSF headquarters building at 4440 13th Street in Ashland. Meet in the Lobby at 1:15 pm to carpool to Ashland.
7:30 pm: A Celebration of Carl and Buzzy Leming’s Life - This fall on November 4, board members Carl and Buzzy Leming will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary! Our program is a tribute to Carl and Buzzy and will feature testimonials by board members and friends and conversation with Carl and Buzzy who are looking forward to this event. Please join us in celebrating the lives and accomplishments of our two most loved board members. Dr. James Gifford will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Please send greetings to the Lemings by September 13 to the JSF for inclusion in a Memory Book.
8:30 pm: Reception - Greenbo Lake State Resort Park will host a reception to conclude the weekend activities.
Throughout the Jesse Stuart Weekend, David Palmore and Don Miller will be available to evaluate your Stuart first editions and other hard-to-find Stuart books. If you have duplicates of first editions, we may be able to accept them as trade-ins on other books. This is a good time to expand your Stuart Collection and do some trading.
